Ceremony for Viet vets planned at Ripley
CAMP RIPLEY — Camp Ripley and the soldiers of the Training Support Unit of Camp Ripley will hold their annual open house and a welcome home ceremony for Vietnam veterans from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sept. 18 at the Camp Ripley Training Center located near Little Falls.
The event will have a wide variety of displays and attractions, including military vehicles, a rock climbing wall, a classic car show, the Minnesota State Patrol and the Minnesota Department of Transportation.
“This year I wanted to make the open house something even more special than in previous years,” said Minnesota Army National Guard Col. Scott St. Sauver, Camp Ripley post commander.. “I received an outstanding welcome home from the people of Minnesota after both of my deployments and I challenged my staff to put together something similar for the veterans of Vietnam.”
Vietnam veterans, who would like to participate in the welcome home ceremony are asked to register at Building 1 and 2 between 12-2:30 p.m. Maps to the building will be available at the Camp Ripley gate.
The program for the Welcome Home Ceremony will include a short bus ride, guest speakers and a military band.
“I remember coming into town and seeing a line of American Flags being held by the Patriot Guard Riders and that sight gave me chills, I want to give that same feeling to the Vietnam vets,” said St. Sauver.
