Brainerd Legion events

The Past Commanders will have its annual chicken and corn feed from 5:30 p.m. until gone Thursday at the Legion. Cost is $8 for adults, $4 for kids.

Brainerd Elks Lodge breakfast

Brainerd Elks Lodge No. 615 will serve breakfast from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday at 215 South Ninth St., Brainerd. Order from the menu. All proceeds go to support Elks programs.

Brainerd Elks Lodge Polish sausage feed

Brainerd Elks Lodge will have a Polish sausage feed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Brainerd Elks Lodge, 215 South Ninth St., Brainerd. Cost: $8.

Move Over Meat vegetarian cooking class

A vegetarian cooking class will be from 4-5:30 p.m. Aug. 14 at the Oak Street Christian School, 2910 Oak Street, Brainerd.

The class is called “Cooking by the Book—Better Breakfasts, Part II.”

Join us in learning how to make a delicious breakfast that is good for your health. In addition to a further discussion on grains, this class will also introduce the preparation of tofu.

BHS class of 1973

The 1973 class of Brainerd High School will hold its first 40th reunion planning meeting at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Brainerd American Legion. BHS73 has a Facebook page where you can request to be a member of the group or you can email Kathy (Dewes) Boser at

NARVRE Unit 127 to meet

NARVRE Unit 127 will meet 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Brainerd Public Library. All retired and present railroad workers and their spouses are welcome. Lunch will be served after the meeting.

Baxter Lions Club

The Baxter Lions Club will meet on Monday at Camp Vanasek. The board meeting is at 6 p.m. Dinner is at 6:30 p.m. and the regular meeting at 7 p.m.

Lakes and Woods Garden Club

AITKIN — The Lakes and Woods Garden Club of Aitkin will have its garden show on Aug. 13 at the Westside Calvary Church on Highway 210 in Aitkin.

Exhibitors are welcome. Registration will be on Friday from 5-6 p.m. and Aug. 13 from 7:30 to 9:30 a.m. No entries will be accepted after 9:30 a.m. as everything needs to be in place so that judging may begin promptly at 10:30 a.m. Entries may be removed between 3-3:30 p.m.

The show will be free to the public for viewing from 1-3 p.m. Visitors will be able to vote for their choices as best in show. Members will bring items (perennials) from their gardens which will be available at the plant sale at very attractive prices.

VFW upcoming events

VFW Post and Auxiliary No. 1647 regular monthly meetings will be 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Post Home.

The Friday dinner will be the VFW chicken and corn feed from 5:30 p.m. until gone at the VFW. Cost: $8. Reservations may be made by calling the VFW club at 829-6393.

Post No. 1647 and Auxiliary will have a picnic beginning at noon Aug. 14 at St. Mathias Park. Bring a dish to share.

Class of 1952

Class of 1952 will meet at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Bonanza.

Retired Firefighters breakfast

The Brainerd Retired Firefighters breakfast will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at Wings Restaurant.

Holbrook reunion planned

BAXTER — The 15th annual Holbrook family reunion will be Sunday at the Gene Holbrook residence, 13099 Timberlane Drive, Baxter. Coffee and rolls will be served at 10 a.m. with a worship service at 10:30 a.m. and a potluck dinner at noon. Dishes, silverware, coffee and cold drinks will be provided.

A gathering to hear about Jeff DeVaney’s travels

NISSWA — Everyone is invited to an informal gathering for Jeff DeVaney from 2-5 p.m. Aug. 13 at Christ Community Church, 24646 Hazelwood Drive, Nisswa. He will share pictures of his travels and experiences of Europe and the Middle East. Bring an hors d’oeuvre or dessert to share. DeVaney will be returning to Kuwait for another year on Aug. 15.

Nisswa Women’s Club monthly meeting scheduled for Aug. 18

NISSWA — The Nisswa Women’s Club will hold its monthly membership meeting at noon Aug. 18, with a social time from 11:30 a.m. to noon at The Lodge at Brainerd Lakes, Baxter. The program will be “Keeping Bees and Harvesting Honey” presented by JoAnn Weaver, Breezy Point Mayor.

Hostesses for the meeting are Nancy Schwieters, Marie Jorgensen, Mary Gibson, Pat Johnson and Julaine Babcock. The inspirational will be given by Sharon Ingvoldstad.

The Nisswa Women’s Club meeting scheduled for Sept. 15 at Bar Harbor supper club, Lake Shore, will include an annual meeting, the election of officers and 2012 membership dues.

Square dance demonstration

There will be a square dancing demonstration from 4-6 p.m. Aug. 13 at Paul Bunyan Land. Wear your dancing clothes and a club badge to get into the park with free admission.

Ray’s Promenaders Square Dance Club

Ray’s Promenaders Square Dance club is offering an introduction to square dance from 7-9 p.m. Aug. 15 and 22 at the Franklin Art Center cafeteria.

Mille Lacs boat launch planned

The Lakes Area Singles will sponsor a Mille Lacs boat launch at 7 p.m. Aug. 27 from the Blue Goose in Garrison for singles aged 40-plus. The 65-foot private boat will return at 10 p.m. Cost will be $32 or less depending on the number of people. There will be dancing at the Blue Goose afterward. Senior dances

Senior dances will be from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday at Motley with music by Country Diamonds; and from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday at Waukenabo with music by John and Virginia.

NAARFE meeting

Brainerd Chapter No. 738 National Association of Active and Retired Federal Employees will meet Tuesday at Bricks in Motley. Social time starts at 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at 12:30 p.m. Presentation will be from the Chip Craavack office.

WHS class of 1946

Brainerd’s Washington High School class of 1946 will meet 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the LaVerne Niemi daughter’s home, 21876 Tall Timbers Road. We will, weather permitting, take a pontoon/boat ride for lunch at Bar Harbor. Directions: Nine miles north on Highway 371 to Tall Timbers Road. Order off the menu. Daughters of the American Revolution to meet

Captain Robert Orr Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution will take a trip to the Camp Ripley Military Museum to view the commemorative Civil War exhibit on Aug. 13. Those who wish to carpool should meet at the Sawmill Inn parking lot at 9:15 a.m. After a brief business meeting and museum tour, lunch will be at the Eagle’s Landing Golf Club.
