First 2012 Crow Wing County baby turns 1

She likes to be goofy, even when she’s getting in trouble.

But how can her parents — Maria and James Mayfield — not smile at their daughter Katelynn Marie Mayfield, who will turn 1 on New Year’s Day?

Katelynn was the first baby born in Crow Wing County in 2012. Katelynn weighed in at 6 pounds, 7 ounces and was 19 inches long. Katelynn was born on Maria Mayfield’s actual due date at Essentia Health’s St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd.

“Katelynn likes to be the center of attention,” Mayfield said at her husband’s parents’ home in Frazee. The Mayfields moved to Frazee in late November when her husband found a job there. “We wanted to be closer to family.”

The Mayfields are originally from the Detroit Lakes area. They moved to Brainerd in July after living in Duluth and then to Mankato.

The Mayfields chose the name Katelynn because they liked it and her middle name Maria, was named after Maria’s family, which makes her the fourth generation Maria in her family.

Mayfield said that Katelynn is pretty quiet when she doesn’t know people. Katelynn loves to play outside and she cries when she has to come back inside. She also loves to go on family walks.

“She loves baths,” said Mayfield. “If she is cranky we’ll throw her in the bath.”

Mayfield said Katelynn loves her older brother Colton, 2.

“She always tries to go by him and will give him kisses and hugs,” said Mayfield. “Colton for the most part loves his sister, but once in awhile he’ll get jealous and then tries to get my attention.

“Colton and Katelynn have different personalities.”

Katelynn, who has lots of dark brown hair, ate her first bowl of cereal at 4-months-old and loved it. Her favorite food is squash and graham crackers.

“She has tried a lot of food from carrots, soups and hot dishes,” said Katelynn’s mother. “We tried to give her ice cream and she spit it out. She is not a picky eater.”

Katelynn began crawling at 6-months-old and then took her first seven steps Nov. 20. She walked from the couch to the love seat in the living room at their Brainerd home.

Katelynn’s grandparents include Robert and Cindy Mayfield of Frazee and Daniel and Rhonda Mohn of Rochert.
