Celebrating women of all ages

Join women of all ages from 1-4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 23, at The Center to celebrate the spirit of women!

The event is entitled Today’s Women. It is a health education event with the focus areas of breast cancer and menopause. We will listen to medical professionals, survivors and caregivers. There will be time for questions, answers, advice, suggestions and, most importantly, sharing. We encourage you to invite your grandmother, your mom, your daughter your granddaughter, your sister and your girlfriends.

Learn the warning signs for breast cancer, the changes in the medical field and listen to personal sharing from a long time survivor and her caregiver, Kathy and Bruce Buxton. Kathy will share with you her story as a survivor; her journey. Medically, things have changed and we will have medical professionals here to explain the process. Come and learn what a navigator is!

There will be five breakout sessions; attendees will be able to go to three of them. Topics will include; massage, manicures, nutrition, accessorizing do’s and don’ts and card making. You will learn the health benefits of massage, how to make better food choices, learn when scarfs and jewelry go together and when they don’t, have your nails painted pink and you will make a card that you will give to a woman you know is in need of support.

The last health education focus area for the afternoon will be menopause. A medical professional will explain the signs, symptoms and give suggestions on how best to survive this life changing time in women’s lives. There will be sharing and humor along the way! Make a list of your questions; don’t hesitate to find out what is “normal” or when you should seek medical attention. Learn what you need to ask your mother, grandmother about their experiences going through menopause. This is an area that women need to talk to other women about; you are not alone as you go through menopause!

The afternoon will end with chocolate dessert; another dessert option will be available for those who are not chocolate fans! Door prizes will be given out; you just need to be here to win! It will be an afternoon filled with health education, sharing, fun, support and a celebration of women!

An important outcome for the afternoon is encouraging women to be aware of their own health, identify when it changes, and realize that you need to do something about it; that is one area that for women is still a work in progress. Women need to know that they need to take care of themselves while they are taking care of others!

Please call The Center, 829-9345 to sign-up; we need to know that we have enough desserts! This event is open to all women, any age. You do not need to be a member of The Center to attend.

This event is sponsored by Essentia Health and The Center. Contributing sponsors are Herberger’s, Life Care Center, Deb Endres, Aimee Jambor and Bev Wells.

DEANN BARRY is The Center director.
