Another day, another missed Minnesota legislative deadline

Megan Franzen

Grade: Senior.

Age: 17.

Art focus: Brainerd High School (BHS) Journalism.

Adviser nomination: “I have had Megan in both journalism and creative writing classes, and in each, she demonstrated a writing talent and diligence far above many of her peers. She’s a delightful rarity in that she’s a perfectionist. She isn’t afraid of giving her work intense reflection and revision to create a better final product.”

Artist most admired: Michael Jackson.

Memorable fine arts achievement: “I went to state in 2013 for mock trial.”

What do you like to write: “I like to write historical fiction. I like to be more deep, not shallow and use symbolism.”

Proudest piece: “I did a bigger piece where I wrote a manuscript. I started writing it during the summer of my sophomore year and finished it during the summer of my junior year. The story is called ‘The Violinist Boy.’ It is 160 pages long and is about a young impoverished boy who finds himself through the violin. I tried to get it published, but haven’t yet.”

How does writing make you feel: “I like it a lot. It’s one of my favorite things to do. It’s an escape, an outlet. I have so many ideas that I have to put it down on paper.”

Favorite book: “Walden.”

Favorite president: Abraham Lincoln.

Favorite TV show: “Survivor.”

Favorite movie: “Shutter Island.”

Favorite song: “Timber.”

Favorite singer: Daughtry.

Other activities/clubs: Mock trial, speech and 4-H.

Favorite thing to cook: Tortellini.

Parents: Jason and Betty Jo Franzen of Brainerd.

Honorable Mentions: Yuki Hirai, junior, mock trial: “This is Yuki’s third year as a lawyer on the mock trial team. He is gifted in his ability to focus on the important points he needs to make. Yuki’s other strengths are his work ethic (he always is prepared and ready to go) and motivation to do his best.

Lizzy Rueger, senior, art: “Lizzy has taken a number of art classes at BHS. She brings a bright smile, diligent work ethic, positive attitude and artistic talent to each class. Her work is meticulous and creative and always exceeds assigned criteria. Lizzy is skillful and her artwork illustrates her eye for detail and quality. She is an asset to any class and example for her peers.”
