God is in the small stuff

My face swelled up like a balloon on Friday and it helped me realize that God is in the small stuff.

Just before I was to go fishing with some friends I was stung by a bee in the face. It brought with it the normal pain of a bee sting for the first 45 seconds and then very weird things began to happen in my body. My feet began to tingle and itch, my head began to pound, and I started to get a rash over my entire body. It also felt as if my ears and throat were swelling. I thought it would all pass if I just sat down and drank some water but it did not. So I continued to get ready for our fishing and hoped it would pass. And it did, for the most part. The pounding in my head stopped, the rash on my body went away, and the swelling in my ears and throat subsided after about an hour. That was when my right eye began to swell. As the evening progressed it continued to swell and get worse. By the time I went to bed Friday night my right eye was entirely swollen shut and my left eye had begun to swell. I put some ice on my face hoping the swelling would be gone by morning, but I woke up to discover that the swelling in my right eye had transferred to my left eye considerably. I could not even open my right eye and could just barely see out my left eye. It was ugly. My wife spent the late morning and early afternoon with me at the clinic with the doctor who gave me some medicine to relieve the swelling and advised me to be careful in the future when around bees.

It was an interesting experience to say the least, and it taught me a valuable lesson. I was reminded how fragile my health and my body really are. As I spent the day Saturday without much eyesight I thought of how blessed I was to be able to see even a little. I thought of how different life would be in the dark, and I realized God has given me so much to be grateful for. It is so easy for me to take for granted all the blessing God gives. God used that little bee to remind me that He has given me so much. Even in something little like that bee God was teaching me something.

My face is back to its normal size and I am grateful to God for the lesson He taught me. It is a shame that it takes incidents like this to remind me of all that God has done for me.

It makes me wonder, what have you thanked God for lately? Have you recognized the little blessings He has placed in your life? Maybe that difficulty you are going through right now is God at work trying to teach you a very important lesson. I challenge you to stop and reflect on all that God has given you and has done for you. He is in control of all that is going on in your life. Give Him thanks. Psalm 118:1 reminds us of this very truth. “Oh give thanks to the Lord for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.”
