National Association of Retired and Veteran Railway Employees, Unit 127, will meet 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Brainerd Public Library. All retired and current Railway employees and spouses are welcome. Lunch will be served at the meeting.

Brainerd Elks Lodge Polish sausage feed

Brainerd Elks Lodge will have a Polish sausage feed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Brainerd Elks Lodge, 215 South Ninth St., Brainerd. Cost: $8.

Vegetarian cooking class

A vegetarian cooking class will be from 4-5:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at the Oak Street Christian School, 2910 Oak Street, Brainerd. The class will be “Bread with that Something Extra.” To register, or for questions, call Marlene at 829-0635. Registration would be appreciated on or prior to Thursday.

Better Breathers Club

The Better Breathers Club will meet from 1-2:30 p.m. Thursday at Essentia Health, St. Joseph’s Medical Center, lower level, Camp Room. Topic: Learn about a different kind of emphysema and if you are at risk for it. Special guest will be Mike Hixon, Alpha -1 patient. RSVP by Monday. Call 828-7481.

Brainerd Garden Club

The Brainerd Garden Club will meet at 1 p.m. Friday at the Northland Arboretum. Theri Wasniewski, Central Lakes College, will present a program on pruning trees and shrubs. Hostesses are Sharon Orser and Jackie MacDonald. Visitors are welcome.

Backus American Legion events

BACKUS — The Backus American Legion is sponsoring a pumpkin weight guessing contest in conjunction with a fundraiser for area food shelves during the month of October.

This year’s pumpkin, grown and donated by Barb Frederick and Tony Mertens of rural Backus, is on display at the Legion clubrooms, Highways 371 and 87 W. There is no charge for participants to enter a guess on the weight but they can make a contribution to the food shelf fundraiser if they wish. Proceeds will be split between the Pine River and Hackensack area food shelves.

The winner, who need not be present, will be announced at the Legion’s annual adult Halloween party which begins at 8 p.m. Oct. 29 and will receive a $20 beverage/food certificate. There is also a costume contest with prizes. Judging is at 9 p.m. The winner will be announced after that.

An all-you-can-eat fish fry and meat raffle to raise funds for the Backus Fire Dept. and First Responders will be held from 4:30 p.m. until gone Oct. 15 at the Backus American Legion.

Proceeds will go to the firefighters and first responders who serve Backus and several area townships.

The Frankie Lamb Band returns to the Backus American Legion for the monthly Sunday dance from 2-6 p.m. Oct. 16. The band plays classic country and pop tunes, old time and swing. Singles, couples, everybody welcome at the clubrooms at Hwys. 371 and 87 W. A Salisbury steak dinner will be served after the dance from 6 p.m. until gone. Proceeds will go toward prize premiums for 4-H participants at the Cass County Fair.

Pillager Legion and Auxiliary

Pillager American Legion 100 and Auxiliary will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Pillager Community Center. They are looking to increase membership. If you are a veteran or family member of a veteran, consider attending the meeting.

VFW coming events

The VFW Post No. 1647 and Auxiliary will meet at 7 p.m. Tuesday at the home post.

The VFW Auxiliary fish fry will be 5:30 p.m. until gone Friday. Cost: $8. Reservations are appreciated.

The VFW Sunday breakfast will be 8 a.m. to noon, serving a full breakfast menu. Cost: $6.

Baxter Lions Club

The Baxter Lions Club will meet Monday at Camp Vanasek. The board meeting is at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the regular meeting will be at 7 p.m.

Retired fire people

Retired fire people will meet for breakfast 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Wings Restaurant. All retired fire people, spouses, widows and friends are welcome.

Brainerd Service League

The Brainerd Service League will meet Tuesday. Jan Sheets is the hostess. Social time begins at 11:30 a.m. with lunch and meeting to follow. Members are reminded to RSVP.

‘Singles Matters’ discussion

Singles Matters discussion will be 7-8:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Brainerd Public Library. Open and free to all singles over 40. We discuss matters concerning singles twice a month at the Brainerd Library. In the next discussion we will be discussing excerpts from the book “The Five Love Languages,” authored by Gary Chapman.

Pumpkin Patch on 77

NISSWA — The Pumpkin Patch, located at 4758 County Road 77, Nisswa, will be open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturdays and 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sundays from now until Oct. 30.

IAAP meeting

The Brainerd Chapter of International Association of Administrative Professionals will be meeting 5:30 p.m. Oct. 18 in Room C233 at Central Lakes College. NAARFE meeting

The Brainerd Chapter No. 738 National Association will meet Tuesday at Bonanza. Social time starts at 11:30 a.m. with lunch served at 12:30 p.m. Presentation will be by Blue Cross/Blue Shield.

American Diabetes Association Brainerd Lakes Chapter

The American Diabetes Association Brainerd Lakes Area Chapter will meet at 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Bonanza in Baxter. There will be a presentation on glycemic index and how it impacts blood sugar by Michelle Pelkey, Diabetes Resource Program, Essentia Health SJMC Brainerd Clinic.

Bee-Nay-She Council Bird Club

The Bee-Nay-She Council Bird Club will meet at 7 p.m. Thursday at the Jesse F. Hallett Memorial Library in Crosby. Identification series will be presented by Warren Nelson. The program, “Connecting Birds and Birders,” will be given by Steven Blanich.
