Brainerd Legion upcoming events

The Post Executive Committee will meet 7 p.m. Monday at the Legion. The Auxiliary membership dinner will be at 6 p.m. This is a free dinner for members who have paid their dues. Dues are payable at the door. Donations for the Veterans Christmas gift shop will be appreciated.

Terry and Janet Metzger will serve a jumbo shrimp dinner from 5:30 p.m. until gone Thursday. Cost: $13.

Wine tasting event

A wine tasting and light hors d’oeuvres tasting event to benefit Northern Pines Mental Health Center will be from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday at Prairie Bay Grill and Catering, 15115 Edgewood Drive, Baxter.

The second Thursday at Prairie Bay Grill & Catering is a celebration of the work of area nonprofit organizations. The second Thursday of each month Prairie Bay joins forces with Baxter Cash Wise Liquor to offer a nonprofit group the opportunity to raise funds for their organization.

Brainerd Elks Lodge feed

Brainerd Elks Lodge will have a Polish sausage feed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Brainerd Elks Lodge, 215 South Ninth St., Brainerd. Cost: $8.

Surf and turf at Backus Legion

BACKUS — The Backus American Legion’s first surf and turf dinner of the fall/winter season will be served from 5 p.m. until gone Friday. Proceeds go toward veterans, community and post programs. The clubrooms are located at Hwys. 371 and 87 W.

Backus Legion Auxiliary support the troops soup feed and bake sale

A chili and chicken noodle soup feed and bake sale to support active duty troops will be sponsored by the Backus American Legion Auxiliary from 4 p.m. until gone Nov. 12.

The price is $5 with proceeds going toward supplying troops with cool ties to keep their temperatures cooler in hot climate conditions, holiday gifts and snacks and personal items not readily available to them overseas. The event will be held at the post clubrooms at Hwys. 371 and 87 W.

Application for Toys for Kids

Families needing help to provide Christmas gifts for their children 15 years and younger may apply to the local Toys For Kids program, sponsored by Heartland Detachment, Marine Corps League. Applications can be made at the Salvation Army Office, at 208 South Fifth St. in Brainerd during normal office hours on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays now through Dec. 1.

Distribution of gifts to approved families will be at the National Guard Armory on Dec. 13.

Friends of the Brainerd Public Library

Friends of the Brainerd Public Library will be 6:30 p.m. Monday in the conference room at the Brainerd Public Library. Board members: Come to the conference room at 5:45 p.m. to discuss the amended Articles of Incorporation and Amended By-laws.

Lyme disease meeting

Note new time: Minnesota Lyme Association will be meeting from 1-3 p.m. Thursday at the Trailside Community Center at the Baptist Church south of Pequot Lakes. Meetings will be in the afternoons through March. For more information call Judy at 543-4945.

Vegetarian cooking class

There will be a free vegetarian cooking class from 4-5:30 p.m. Nov. 13 at the Oak Street Christian School, 2910 Oak St., Brainerd.

Brainerd Garden Club

The Brainerd Garden Club will meet at 1 p.m. Friday at the Northland Arboretum. Jackie Froemming, master gardener, will present a program on outdoor winter decor. Hostesses are Jeanne Larson and Sharon Bodie. Visitors are welcome.

Lakes and Woods Garden Club

AITKIN — The Lakes and Woods Garden Club will be meeting 7 p.m. Monday at the Mille Lacs Energy Cooperative in Aitkin. Our program is “Calling All Hummingbirds and Butterflies.” Speaker is Jan Kolodji, a master gardener in Aitkin. Refreshments will be served. Call Elaine Palthe at 927-6225.

The VFW upcoming events include the VFW Post and Auxiliary meetings at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Pillager American Legion

PILLAGER — The Pillager American Legion Post 100 and Auxiliary will meet 7 p.m. Tuesday at the Pillager Community Center. Bring box top labels, Campbell labels and pop tops. The Auxiliary donated 12 caps with matching blankets and 12 caps to VA hospital Christmas gift shop. These were made by Auxiliary member Marlene Lindeman. A donation was also made to the $5 bill shower for veterans in the hospital.

Bee-Nay-She Council Bird Club

The Bee-Nay-She Council Bird Club will meet 7 p.m. Thursday at the Northland Arboretum, 14259 Conservation Drive in Brainerd. To celebrate 35 years of connecting birds and people in the Brainerd lakes area, Warren Nelson will present the program, “Birds and People — The Fun of Birding.”

Germans from Russia Heritage group

NARFE to meet

MOTLEY — NARFE will meet for social hour from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. with lunch to follow Nov. 15 at Countryside Restaurant in Motley. There will be an open discussion on finding new programs for next year.

Brainerd Dental Assistants meeting

The Brainerd Dental Assistants meeting will be 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Brainerd Public Library. Speaker is Andy Kuecher from Telic Family Chiropractic.

WHS class of 1955

The Washington High School class of 1955, spouses and friends will meet for lunch at 11 a.m. Monday at the Brainerd Lakes Cafe.

Brainerd Auxiliary of the Shrine Hospital for Children

The Brainerd Auxiliary of the Shrine Hospital for Children will not meet in November. The December Christmas party will be held on Dec. 5 at the Eagles Club. Call Holly Heidmann at 851-1110 to make a reservation by Nov. 15. The cost is $9. Donations of canned goods and new toys are welcome. The Auxiliary will also be selling Party Lite candles to raise money for the Shrine Hospital. Beginning in 2012, the Auxiliary will meet quarterly.

Senior dances
