Brainerd Legion upcoming events

Vegetarian cooking class

Move Over Meat, a free vegetarian cooking class, will be from 4-5:30 p.m. Jan. 15 at Oak Street Christian School, 2910 Oak St., Brainerd. We will be watching Meatless Dinner Meals, Part 3. Food samples will include recipes from both Parts 2 and 3.

Brainerd Elks Lodge will have a Polish sausage feed from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Brainerd Elks Lodge, 215 South Ninth St., Brainerd. Cost: $8.

Backus Legion winter activity schedule

BACKUS — Cribbage, 500 Cards, a Soup Cook-Off, Surf and Turf dinner, Super Bowl Party, Valentine’s Sweetheart Dinner, resumption of monthly Sunday breakfasts and St. Patrick’s Day feed and party are included in the Backus American Legion’s scheduled winter activities.

Cribbage begins Sunday and is played at 1 p.m. every Sunday through Feb. 26, except on Feb. 19, the date of the monthly dance. There is no dance in January. Sunday 500 cards runs at 1 p.m. runs March 4 through April 29, except on dance Sundays (third Sunday of the month) and Easter Sunday, April 8.

A soup cook-off with prizes will be held at 3 p.m. Jan. 14. A Surf and Turf dinner featuring a tenderloin steak and skewered shrimp will be held Jan. 20 from 5 p.m. until gone.

February events include a Super Sunday party at 5 p.m. Feb. 5 with prizes, beverage discounts and potluck food. Those attending are asked to donate to area food shelves.

A Valentine’s sweetheart dinner of either prime rib or jumbo shrimp with hospitality time at 5 p.m. and serving at 6:30 p.m. will be held Feb. 11. Legion Auxiliary monthly breakfasts will resume Feb. 12 and will be served the second Sunday of the month from 7:30 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. through October.

The St. Patrick’s Day party March 17 features Fran Gack in her “Me, Myself and I” musical show with a meal of corned beef, cabbage, potatoes and carrots from 5 p.m. until gone. Friday night meat raffles continue at 5:30 p.m. and Bingo on Friday night after the raffle and Sunday afternoons at 4 p.m. when there are enough players except dance Sundays. Brainerd Garden Club

The Brainerd Garden Club will meet 1 p.m. Friday at the Northland Arboretum. Jackie Froemming will present a program on extending the growing season in Minnesota. Hostesses will be Marty Peisch and Coralee Fox. Visitors are welcome.

Brainerd AAUW

Brainerd AAUW will hold the fifth annual Brain Buster trivia contest on Jan. 14 at Northland Arboretum. Doors will open at 1 p.m. and the contest will begin at 2 p.m. Proceeds from the event will be used to fund scholarships to Central Lakes College. For more information, contact Colleen at 829-6233.

Cuyuna Range Women’s Club

The Cuyuna Range Women’s Club will meet at 1 p.m. Monday in the large meeting room at the Hallett Library in Crosby.

Program will be: “Putting Life’s Affairs in Order.” Nick Zilmer of Koop Funeral Home will provide valuable information and guidance. Musical entertainment will be by Jamie Koop of Jamie Koop Insurance.

Coffee/tea and treats will be provided by hostesses Edie Anderson, Clarice Wolhart and Betty Brager.

The Brainerd Eagles Club will have breakfast from 8:30 a.m. to noon Sunday at 124 Front St., Brainerd, featuring the Eagles special for $6.

Brainerd Service League

The Brainerd Service League January meeting will be from 3:15-4:15 p.m. Thursday at Prairie Bay. Note the day and time change for this meeting. Members are asked to RSVP for the meeting before Monday. The Wine Tasting Fundraiser will follow the meeting at Prairie Bay from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m. Prairie Bay and Cashwise Liquor will provide the appetizers and wine for the event.

Baxter Lions Club

The Baxter Lions Club will meet on Monday at Camp Vanasek. The board meeting is at 6 p.m. with dinner at 6:30 p.m. and the regular meeting at 7 p.m.

Pinetree Patchworkers Quilt Club

Pinetree Patchworkers Quilt Club will meet at 6:45 p.m. Monday at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Baxter. The theme is Fun and Games. Pinetree Patchworkers meets the second Monday each month.

Little Falls VFW dance

LITTLE FALLS — There will be a dance at the Little Falls VFW from 1-4 p.m. Jan. 19 at 1210 Third Ave. NE, Little Falls. $5 admission. The music will be provided by Jerry Biersbach’s Band.

Gastric Bypass Support Group meeting

STAPLES — The Gastric Bypass Support Group for January will meet Thursday at Ernie’s Food Market in Staples. The group will meet inside the entrance at 6:30 p.m. for a Choose Health grocery tour. VFW Post No. 1647 activities
