Military retirees are invited to Camp Ripley on Aug. 25 to the 11th annual AFRAD – Armed Forces Retiree Appreciation Day. The AFRAD is an opportunity for military retirees to receive updated information and briefings about their benefits since 2011. Camp Ripley is just north of Little Falls.
The AFRAD is sponsored by The Retired Enlisted Association (TREA) Chapter 115 from the St. Cloud and Minneapolis-St. Paul area. More information on the AFRAD can be found at www.TREA115.org.

Brainerd Legion upcoming events
Commander Chris will serve a “Fifth Sunday” all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast from 8 a.m. until noon Sunday. Cost is $7 for adults and $4 for kids.
Brat or hamburger with potato salad, corn on the cob, and jello salad by Nikki Bible will be served from 5:30 p.m. until gone Thursday. Cost is $8.
Firearms safety training
The VFW Post No. 1647 of Brainerd will sponsor Firearms Safety classes on the following dates: Aug. 9, 21, 23, 28, 30 and Sept. 6. at the Brainerd Public Library from 6-8:30 p.m. of each day listed. Field Day is Aug. 25. Call the VFW post after 3 p.m. to register, you must be 11 years old as of Aug. 9. Cost is $7.50 payable on completion of class. Class is limited to 20 students.
The GSS-Bethany Auxiliary will meet 10 a.m. Thursday in the Bethany Community Room, 804 Wright St., Brainerd. Special guest: Jenny Writz, activity director. All Auxiliary members encouraged to attend.
Ray’s Promenader’s will be sponsoring a square dance Friday at First Presbyterian Church in Brainerd. Myron Hollatz will be calling Plus at 7:30 p.m. and Mainstream at 8 p.m. Jim Amweg and Ann Dosh will be hosting. Ice cream sundaes will be served following the dance.
In addition, all square dancers are invited to the Crow Wing County Fairgrounds 4:30-6:30 p.m. Aug. 4. There will be dancing on the Mills Free Stage.
Camp Knutson quilt auction
The 26th Annual Camp Knutson Quilt Auction will be Aug. 11 at Camp Knutson, 11169 Whitefish Ave., Crosslake. The silent auction and quilt viewing will begin at 10 a.m. and the live auction at noon. The Paul Bunyan Auxiliary of Lutheran Social Service sponsors the auction. We hope to have approximately 160 quilts for the live auction. It’s a fun day to come out and experience the beauty of Camp Knutson while supporting Camp Knutson’s mission of providing a camp experience for children with special needs.
Center’s Morning Club
The Lakes Area Senior Morning Club name has been changed to The Center’s Morning Club.
The Center’s Morning Club meets each Wednesday morning from 9:30-10:30 a.m. A speaker program is scheduled each week on various subjects of interest to the community. The club also participates in the “Books in a Bag” program sponsored by the public library. All members of the Center, men and women, are invited to become part of the group.
The speakers scheduled for August are as follows: Aug. 1, Bill Erickson, Historical Information, and Paula Motl, Center trips and activities; Aug. 8, Bob Nelson, Veteran’s service officer; Aug. 15, Sue Sterling, Basic Computer Information; Aug. 22, Carl Faust, Brainerd Area History; and Aug. 29, D.J. Downie, Deputy Sheriff, Fraud and other criminal activity.
Class of 1971 gathering
A very informal class of 1971 gathering will be 7 p.m. Friday at Shep’s on 6th. Call Carol Bolling if any questions.
The Nisswa Lions Club’s annual Colorado peach sale will be Aug. 7 and 22. Price is $27 per lug. Those who would like to receive e-mail updated messages should leave their email address with Martin’s Sport Shop or Adirondack Coffee Shop.
The Backus Lions will be selling peaches as well. Sale begins 7:30 a.m. Aug. 8 at Highway 371 Liquor Locker (formerly Jim’s Off Sale Liquor) parking lot, on the west side of Highway 371 just north of Backus. Sales will be first-come, first-served. No advance orders. Cost is $26 per case with approximately 35-40 large peaches per case.
Fort Ripley Reunion
There will be a Fort Ripley Reunion on Aug. 4 at the Fort Ripley City Park. Registration will be from 11 a.m. to noon with potluck at 12:30 p.m. Coffee, Kool-Aid and utensils and plates will be provided.
On Aug. 4, a small group of volunteers will start their fourth annual five-day, 100-mile ride. They refer to themselves as the Riders of Hope.
This ride is a fundraiser for the research of a cure and to support patients affected by Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS), known as Lou Gehrig’s Disease.
Bernie and Chuck Flickinger formed this group in honor of their nephew and his family whom are suffering with ALS.
“Riders of Hope” make their 100-mile ride on horseback or on four-wheelers and this ride is accomplished rain or shine. The riders start at Bernie and Chuck Flickinger’s residence and camp at Knob Hill along the Crow Wing River, Fish Lake in the Leader area and end their ride back at the Flickinger residence.
The first year “The Riders of Hope” raised $968; last year they raised $1,185.37. This year their goal is to raise $2,500.
