The Brainerd Legion upcoming events include a Post membership meeting at 7 p.m. Monday and a stuffed porkloin dinner by Katie and Mike at 5:30 p.m. Thursday. Cost: $8.

Encore Arts Association

Encore Arts Association will meet on Tuesday at the Lakes Senior Activity Center, 804 Kingwood, Brainerd, from 7-9 p.m. Members will be painting on small pumpkins and gourds for seasonal decoration at local nursing homes. Bring pumpkins and/or gourds to the meeting, if you can. Paint supplies are furnished. A short report about the National Sumi-e Art show and workshops at the Burnsville Art Center in Burnsville will be given by Gail Walsh.

Chapter CJ of PEO

Chapter CJ of PEO will meet at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday at Edgewood Vista on Beaver Dam Road. Jenny Holden, Bettie Snyder and Bev Dinham will be the hostesses. Diane Hillman will give the program.

Frankly Country playing at Backus Legion

BACKUS — Frankie Lamb’s Frankly Country Band returns to the Backus American Legion 2-6 p.m. Oct. 21, playing classic country and pop, old time and swing.

The dance will be followed by a hot beef dinner for $8 with proceeds going to 4-H price premiums at the Cass County Fair.

The clubrooms are located at Highways 371 and 87 W.

Great pumpkin weight

guessing contest

BACKUS — The annual Great Pumpkin Weight Guessing Contest is on at the Backus American Legion in conjunction with a fund raiser for local food shelves. Participants can take a free guess on the weight of a giant pumpkin for a chance to win a $20 food and beverage certificate. They can also elect to make a donation to local food shelves. The contest winner will be announced Oct. 27 at the Legion’s annual Halloween Party beginning at 8 p.m. The winner need not be present. The party features potluck hors d’oeuvres and a costume contest with several prizes with judging beginning at 9 p.m.

The Class of 1954 will meet 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at Grizzly’s.

Lake Country Nordic

Ski Club to meet

BACKUS — The Lake Country Nordic Ski Club will be hosting a board meeting at 6 p.m. followed by a general membership meeting at 6:30 p.m. on Monday at the Cass County Land Department building in Backus. The public is invited to attend either meeting to find out more about the club and get involved. New members are encouraged.

The Lake Country Nordic Ski Club received its nonprofit designation in February 2012. The club will be grooming Cut Lake, Goose Lake, Hiram and Washburn cross-country ski trails.

Skiers, groomers and other interested persons are encouraged to email to have contact information added to an email list, which is the primary method of getting information out to those interested.

Lakes Area Caged Bird Club

We’ll be discussing our birds: cockatoos, macaws, Amazons, African grays, finches, etc., on Thursday at 7 p.m. at the Oak Lawn Town Hall located on Highway 18, one mile east of the intersection of Highways 18 and 25. For more information, call Char at 218-764-2625.

Nisswa Women’s Club to

award scholarships at

October 18 meeting

BREEZY POINT — The Nisswa Women’s Club will hold its monthly membership meeting at noon Thursday with a social time from 11:30 a.m. to noon at the Marina II restaurant at Breezy Point Resort.

Beth Passi, NWC past president and CLC scholarships committee chair, will present scholarships to the CLC student recipients selected by the NWC scholarships committee.

The program for the meeting will be “Crossing Arts Alliance” presented by Millie Morris and Mary Boran.

Hostesses for the meeting are Suzanne Sundquist, Jany Myhra, Rosemary Whitman, Bev Siemens and Eunice Wiebolt. The inspirational will be given by Beth Passi.

Widowed Friends

Widowed Friends will meet at 11 a.m. Monday at the Nisswa Legion.

VFW upcoming events

VFW upcoming events include a Friday night Oktoberfest dinner serving from 5:30 p.m until gone. Cost: $8. Reservations appreciated; call the VFW at 829-6393.

Sunday breakfast with a full menu will be served from 8 a.m. to noon Oct. 21 at the VFW. Cost: $6.

WHS class of 1944

WHS class of 1944 will meet 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Northwind Grille in Brainerd.

Senior dances

Senior dances will be from 2-5 p.m. Wednesday at the Brainerd Eagles with music by Country Ramblers; and from 1-4 p.m. Friday at Deerwood with music by Carl and Don.

Brainerd Area Retired Educators

DEERWOOD — Brainerd Area Retired Educators will meet for a noon luncheon Monday at the Cascade Methodist Church in Deerwood. The speaker will be Sheila Dechantal speaking on banned books. All retired teachers and administrators in the area are welcome to attend. Call 829-6900 for reservations. The next meetings will be in April, June, September and October 2013.

Sons of Norway-Sagatun Lodge 018

Sons of Norway-Sagatun Lodge 018 will meet at 7 p.m. Friday at Trinity Lutheran Church, Brainerd. Program: ”Vikings in the Attic” presented by Eric Dregni, Minnesota author. This program is about little known traditions cherished by Scandinavians in America.

BHS class of 1973

The next meeting for the BHS class of 1973 will be 11 a.m. Wednesday at Prairie Bay in Baxter, where foods will be sampled for the 40th reunion. They will be coming up with a total cost of the reunion for each person after options are discussed with the manager. Other topics will be covered at this meeting also.
