Brainerd’s anti-fluoride forces might get a brief respite from the chemical this week, thanks to delivery here of what one official called a batch of “doggone dirty” fluoride. The respite is temporary as a new delivery is expected here this week.

40 years ago (1974)

Greg McComas of Brainerd, Scott Stanfield of Crosby and Mark Palmer of Staples are winners in the Elks Lodge free throw contest. McComas sank 22 of 25 in the 8-9 bracket, Stanfield hit 17 of 25 in the 10-11 group and Palmer hit 16 of 25 in the 12-13 age group.

60 years ago (1954)

(Photo) Benny Thrun stopped at the Dispatch to show sports editor Jim Wallace a string of walleyes he caught at Mille Lacs. Thrun caught a limit three days in a row, then a half-limit the fourth day, but they were this 8-2 walleye, plus a 6-0, 5-0 and 3.5 pounder.

80 years ago (1934)

Development of the natural bass hatchery at Gull River into one of the finest and largest in the state is sought by the Crow Wing Game Protective Club through a CWA project. In its present state the hatchery yields millions of bass fingerlings each year.

100 years ago (1914)

Brainerd and Walker baseball fans may soon see another star added to the Bush-Bender galaxy at the Philadelphia Athletics. The Chippewa Indian left-hander Joe Graves stands 6-1. He played for Ed Rogers’ team and the city of Brainerd team, showing a world of speed.
