(Photo) Winona Wheeler, 72, of Lakeshore, rattles off another spelling word during the Regional Senior Citizen Spelling Bee in Pillager. The 1990 state spelling champ correctly spelled “severance” to clinch the regional title and a trip to the state tourney in Crookston.

30 years ago (1984)

(Photo) Local guide Smokey Rathbun caught this near-record 8-1 largemouth bass in four feet of water using a Lindy Single Spinner with an Auger Frog Trailer. The lunker was caught during filming for an Al Lindner’s Outdoors segment, “Big Baits for Big Bass.”

40 years ago (1974)

A lawsuit stemming from leakage problems in the Brainerd High School roof will begin Tuesday before Judge John Spellacy. Litigation began two years ago, in connection with leakage dating back to the roof’s installation in 1968.

60 years ago (1954)

Police Chief Louis Rofidal today warned Brainerd merchants to clear their safes of large amounts of cash after business hours. The warning followed a break-in at Staples that netted thieves $8,000. There was a second break-in at Staples and one at Hibbing.

80 years ago (1934)

Authorities were checking the story of 9-year-old Raymond “Buddy” Tibbets of 2nd Avenue NE, who said he was kidnapped, put in a sack, then released three miles from where he had been wading in a stream with his friend, “Billie” Turner.

100 years ago (1914)

There has just been issued from the Dispatch presses a fine example of the work of this firm, being the May 14th directory of the Northwest Telephone Exchange. At 36 pages, it is four pages larger than last year’s edition issued in November, 1913.
