The Brainerd Bears, and the North Central League, hope the allure of minor league baseball played on real grass, under open skies and before fans in cheap seats will spell

success when the fledgling league starts. Opening night the Bears host the Minneapolis Loons.

Nancy Fleischhacker, Brainerd High School senior, was runner-up in the shot put at the Class AA State Track meet. She threw the shot 41-11, beating her Region 8AA distance by nearly two feet. It was a career best throw and a school record.

40 years ago (1974)

George Krueger, 66, long-time public official, died at Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis. Krueger was a retired employee of the BN Railroad. He served as a county commissioner for eight years and on the Brainerd City Council for 15 years.

Brainerd police and county authorities today issued a warning that a hold-up artist, traveling alone, was headed for Brainerd after fleeing Wadena. The man wrecked his car in Wadena and hired a car to bring him here. No trace of him has been found yet.

100 years ago (1914)

Leslie "Bullet Joe" Bush, native of Brainerd, pitched a 7-hit shutout for the Philadelphia Athletics against Cleveland. The Athletics scored seven runs in the fifth inning enroute to an 8-0 win.
