At age 11, Jennifer Sweet is the youngest volunteer in a force of 400 at St. Joseph's Medical Center. She spends one day every other week helping her great-grandmother, Marcella Masters, 79, make and sell popcorn for employees and visitors. Proceeds go for equipment purchases.

40 years ago (1974)

The Brainerd School Board building committee approved asking for bids to remove 60,000 yards of dirt from the newly-purchased Bor-Son Construction property for use as fill on the lower site. This will bring the total fill being used to about 100,000 yards.

60 years ago (1954)

The new $12 million crude oil pipeline from Clearbrook in northern Minnesota to St. Paul apparently will not run through Crow Wing County. The proposed route will run through Todd and Wadena counties, then through a corner of Cass and into Morrison County.

80 years ago (1934)

Rolf "Doc" Melby, sweet stroking Brainerd school teacher, brought the championship trophy of the 5th Annual Pine Beach Golf Tourney back to Brainerd. Melby defied high winds to hang up birdies that submerged his opponent, Vick Etienne of St. Paul in the 36-hole final.

100 years ago (1914)

Ludwig Nelson, charged with selling liquor in Crosby without a license, was arrested, pleaded guilty and fined $50 plus costs. The county attorney said there was evidence he had sold beer to Eli Vallaincourt, accused of murdering his wife while drunk.
