The Brainerd area has long been synonymous with trophy walleyes and northerns in its lakes. Now it will become known for its population of sharks. The San Jose Sharks of the NHL announced they will hold their pre-season training camp in Brainerd.

30 years ago (1984)

(Photo) Brainerd Bike Patrol members Jon Stolski and Nancy Fleischhacker took to the streets yesterday. Celeste Novak, coordinator of the five-year-old program said the patrol will begin ticketing adult bicyclists and moped drivers this year.

Preparations for holding a national road race are tough enough, but when your track has been inactive for over a year and has an image problem, the job becomes enormous. Facing this task are Jerry Hansen and Dick Roe, new co-owners of Donnybrooke Speedway.

Word has been received that Roger Nutting, son of Marvin Nutting and Mrs. Maize Nutting, has been sworn in as a cadet at the U.S. Naval Academy. He passed his physical May 12 and was exempt from the mental test due to his high grades at Brainerd Junior College.

80 years ago (1934)

Distribution of the last carload of grasshopper poison was being directed today by County Agent E.G. Roth. This is the last shipment to the county this year, so farmers are encouraged to place the poison bran on infected lands before the hoppers can lay their eggs.

100 years ago (1914)

Miss Blanche Middlestadt, of the Ransford Hotel, alone and single-handed, made the largest catch of any girl in years at Lake Hubert. She caught a Great Northern pike weighing 18 pounds. Ordinary cameras at Hubert did not have lenses large enough to photograph the fish.
