Don Samuelson, snubbed by the union organization he has been allied with, announced today that he was withdrawing from the race for the DFL nomination for governor. The veteran state senator said his campaign has had difficulty raising money.

30 years ago (1984)

St. Francis Catholic School in Brainerd will have its first all-school reunion July 28-29 in conjunction with the school's 75th anniversary. Ruth Laughlin, chair of the reunion, said the biggest challenge has been that records are incomplete for 1909-1921 and missing for 1929.

40 years ago (1974)

Ed Sauer, former Bemidji State golfer from Walker, made his first appearance here and captured the Brainerd Shortstop golf tournament. He scored a 27-hole total of 107 to win by a stroke over Glenn Hasselberg of Staples and Clyde Anderson of Brainerd.

60 years ago (1954)

A young Brainerd man was author of a story in a literary magazine at St. Cloud Teachers College that has caused an uproar at the state capitol. Gov. C. Elmer Anderson said the story was "repulsive and not in good taste." The magazine has been suspended.

80 years ago (1934)

Camp Ripley, summer military base for National Guard units in training, today resembled an evacuated wartime camp with thousands of militiamen called to Minneapolis for the drivers' strike. Approximately 3,400 were rushed there by train and bus on Friday.

100 years ago (1914)

The 10-year-old son of C.M. Taylor was drowned in the lake near Emily. The boy had eaten a heavy dinner and, jumping in the lake soon afterwards, was seized with cramps and died immediately.
