Crow Wing County is not a garbage can. That message rang loud and clear as county board members took steps to see that residents put the lid on illegal dumping. More than a decade of illegal dumping at properties in Unorganized Territory and Bay Lake were ordered cleaned up.

30 years ago (1984)

Longtime Brainerd attorney Clem Ryan has passed away at St. Joseph's Medical Center at age 86. He practiced law in Brainerd from 1920 until his retirement in 1970. Longtime colleague S.G. Fitzpatrick said Ryan "was tough competition, but always honorable."

40 years ago (1974)

A district court jury in the suit over the leaky Brainerd High School roof returned a verdict against Florida-based Celotex Corp, awarding $150,000 to the school district. The jury found in favor of local firms Thelen Heating & Roofing and Stegner, Hendrickson, McNutt architects.

60 years ago (1954)

Chester Wilson, state conservation commissioner, said via letter to the Clark Lake Conservation Club that he will not consider an application to maintain a dam at the lake outlet until they remove their "illegal dam." The club said they will not do that and endanger fish.

80 years ago (1934)

Forty-seven more carloads of cattle passed through Brainerd today on the M & I Railroad to green pastures between here and International Falls. Nearly 100 carloads with 10,000 head of emaciated cattle from drought-stricken southern Minnesota have moved through thus far.

100 years ago (1914)

It was a massacre, not a ball game, that Brainerd fans crowding the Koering Grounds saw as Brainerd clashed with Little Falls and beat them 10 to 3 on Sunday. Pitcher Dominick, heralded by Little Falls as "Old Reliable," blew up with a resounding crash, giving up 13 hits.
