20 years ago (1994)

The Baxter city council will ban the discharge of high-powered rifles after this year's hunting season. Rifle hunting by permit only will be allowed this year south of Mapleton Road. Thereafter, hunting will be allowed only with shotguns and slugs and by bow hunting.

30 years ago (1984)

Wayne Britton, whose class action lawsuit over hot conditions in the county jail, has apparently decided he likes it on the outside. Britton, one of six men furloughed after jail temps exceeded state standards, did not report back and has been missing for a week.

40 years ago (1974)

The Paul Bunyan Chapter of Ducks Unlimited will hold its second annual banquet and fund raiser Sept. 9th at the Moose Lodge. Featured speaker is Lonnie Samuelson, state director. Dinner tickets are $5 and annual memberships run up to $10.

60 years ago (1954)

Harold Benson, of the Ransford Hotel, was driving across the Washington Street bridge at 1:30 a.m. when he saw an 18-year-old girl hanging from the railing. He managed to grab her before she could jump. Police are holding her in custody until her parents arrive here.

80 years ago (1934)

A second suspect in last year's $32,000 robbery of the 1st National Bank here was killed by withering gunfire from St. Paul police. Homer Van Meter, sleepy-eyed machine gunner of the Dillinger gang, was the man who stood lookout on the corner as the gang robbed the Brainerd bank.

100 years ago (1914)

The membership committee of the Chamber of Commerce gathered in 33 applications for membership in two hours on Saturday afternoon. The secretary has sent out 1,000 letters to farmers asking for contributions to the county exhibit at the state fair.
