A multi-state crime spree, which included robbing a Staples bank while threatening employees with a hand grenade, ended in northeast Ohio when a security guard was killed in a store robbery. Four suspects were captured after a high-speed chase filled with gunfire.

Five more county jail inmates were furloughed as the August heat wave shot temps above the state-mandated max of 85 degrees. This brings the total released since Aug. 6 to 11 prisoners. Head jailer Pat Kurtzman said the latest five were work-release inmates.

Cool and rainy weather didn't stop Lindsay Willis from doing what she likes best - playing golf. She fired an 85 - the day's low round - to win the Brainerd Women's Handicap Tournament. Beatsie Fieldman shot a net 75 to win that division of the tournament.

Bids on two Brainerd area highway projects are among many to be opened on Sept. 7 by the state highway dept. First is concrete paving of five miles of Hwy 210 from Aitkin to the Crow Wing County line. Second is laying bituminous on Hwy 18 from Brainerd to Garrison.
100 years ago (1914)
William Englund has returned from a motorcycle trip to Minneapolis. Last Sunday, Englund did the Paul Revere act and whirled out to Nokay Lake, a distance of 6.5 miles, in 14 minutes. He brought back Swedie Erickson and put him in his usual position in left field for the baseball game.
