20 years ago (1994)

Unemployment in Crow Wing County in July was at its lowest rate in five years. And it was the first time in years the number drawing unemployment benefits dropped below 1,000. The county jobless rate was 3.7 percent, with the state at 3.2 percent and the nation at 6.2.

30 years ago (1984)

Wayne Britton, the man who left the county jail on furlough due to high temperatures on Aug. 6, and didn't return, is on his way home - to jail. He was taken into custody yesterday after a Minneapolis bar owner recognized him as an escapee and called police.

40 years ago (1974)

(Photo) Gary Pariseau, fishing Borden Lake out of the Borden Lake Resort, must still be wondering how he landed these two northerns. The 9.5 pound northern has a one-pound northern firmly in its mouth.

60 years ago (1954)

(Photo) Monday was only Aug. 30 but it was an early Christmas for Lucille Avery, whose many friends presented her with an electric typewriter. Though confined to a wheelchair due to polio, she operates her own book shop at the corner of 6th and Kingwood Streets.

80 years ago (1934)

Ft. Ripley and Mogenson's Muskies tied with 8-1 records for the second half title in the Crow Wing County Baseball League. That brings on a playoff game Sunday to decide who plays the first half champions - which happens to be the Muskies - for the overall league title.

100 years ago (1914)

A rat was attracted into the Chamber of Commerce rooms due to the farm crops being stored there for the state fair exhibit. Custodian Jerry Glunt and Secretary Hansing did battle with it and it ran up Glunt's pants leg and into the seat of his pants. The rat lost the battle but bit Glunt on the finger.
