20 years ago (1997)

Once that snow falls, where does it go? Brainerd city engineer Jeff Hulsether said downtown snow is hauled to three sites: a storm pond on SW 6th St., city property in the industrial park and land across from the cemetery. Despite heavy snowfall, there's still plenty of room, he says.

30 years ago (1987)

The Warrior boys' swim team lost to Alexandria last year but got revenge with a dominant 102-64 victory in their opening conference meet. Co-captains Bill McCollough and Todd Olson each won two events, the 100 fly and 100 backstroke, and the 200 and 500 free, respectively.

40 years ago (1977)

At the Democratic endorsing convention to select a candidate to run for the empty congressional seat vacated when Bob Bergland became Sec. of Agriculture, there were ten candidates vying for the job. The final choice was Mike Sullivan, 33, of Motley.

60 years ago (1957)

A sketch of Pres. Lincoln as he made his Gettysburg Address will be presented to Pres. Dwight Eisenhower by a grandson of the artist who made it. The artist is the late Col. Freeman Thorpe of Lake Hubert, who painted portraits of Lincoln and Pres. Grant, among other notables.

80 years ago (1937)

Due to scores of cases of flu and some pneumonia in Brainerd, as part of an epidemic of major proportions in many parts of the country, all visitors will be barred from St. Joseph's Hospital until further notice. Family members of patients will be allowed occasional visits.

100 years ago (1917)

A.A. Anderson is 2 feet 9 inches in height and weighs 100 pounds. Tom "Fat" Wood is 6 feet 5 inches tall and 480 pounds. The two will lead the Brainerd marching team at the St. Paul Winter Carnival. The tailor making their uniforms had to splice two measuring tapes together for Wood.
