Brainerd Area Art Club

The Brainerd Area Art Club will meet 3:30 p.m. Thursday at the Porthole Gallery in Brainerd. Club members will set up for their July/August show at the gallery. For information, contact club president Phyllis Frankum at 829-3850.

Wadena Whirlaways

WADENA - The Wadena Whirlaways will dance at 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the Wadena County Fair. Larry Johansen will be the caller and root beer floats will be served after the dance. Hosts include the Smiths and the Thompsons.

Brainerd Legion upcoming events

Commander Ed's breakfast buffet will be served from 8 a.m. to noon Sunday. Cost is $7.50 for adults and $4 for kids.

The Club Committee will meet at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Legion.

Steak date night will begin 5:30 p.m. Friday at the Legion. Rib eye steak dinner, $11 or two dinners for $20.

Bay Lake Area Lions' award $10,000 in scholarships

The Bay Lake Area Lions awarded 10 deserving graduates from Aitkin and Crosby-Ironton high school districts with a $1,000 scholarship each. Recipients from Aitkin High School were Jeremiah Noon, Kaitlyn Tveit, Marissa Baker, Brandey Robak and Malinda Lahamann-Sharbonda. Receipients from Crosby-Ironton High School were Nicole Laborde, Meredith Silgen, Kryston Wiseley, Olivia Mailhot and Lauren Usherwood. Money for the scholarships is raised at the annual Bay Lake Area Lions Charity golf scramble.

Donations needed for Bay Lake Area Lions auction

The Bay Lake Area Lions is currently collecting items for this year's auction scheduled for July 12 starting at 8 a.m. They are in need of good saleable items like bicycles, yard equipment, lawn furniture, boats, scooters, etc. Proceeds from the auction will help the Lions serve the local communities for another year.

Clothing, housewares, glassware, dishes, books, bedding, electronics or appliances cannot be accepted. Donations can be dropped off at the Lions' property at 18257 State Highway 6, about one mile north of Ruttger's Bay Lake Lodge or four miles south of Deerwood on any Saturday 9 a.m.-noon through July 5. The Washington High School class of 1958 will meet for coffee at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Brickhouse Pizza (formerly Boardwalk Bread and Bagel).

Benefit for Stacy Nelson planned

There will be a benefit for Stacy Nelson from 2-5 p.m. July 5 in the Fairy Garden/Park, 20560 Carolyn Lane, Brainerd.

In March 2013, Nelson was afflicted with Weston Hurst disease, a type of encephalitis, very rare and usually fatal. During her hospitalization, Nelson had five brain surgeries, including removal and replacement of a portion of her skull. She remained in the hospital from March 29, 2013, until July 2013 when she transferred to Bethany for rehabilitation. Nelson's medical expenses are well over $1,000,000. In early July, she will be able to return to her home after modifications are made.

At the benefit, there will be games for the kids, garden tours, a silent auction, volleyball and music by the Sawtooth Band.

Beef and/or ham on a bun, hot dogs, beans, chips, pickles, brownies and beverages will be served.

The benefit will be hosted by Katie Howlett and Coralee Fox.

Pizza Ranch fundraiser for The Center

Volunteers from The Center will be busing tables and providing customer service after 5 p.m. Monday at Pizza Ranch. A percentage of proceeds and all tips go to The Center to support their programs.

Senior dances will be from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 22 at the Pine River Legion with music by Frankly Country; from 1-4 p.m. Sunday, June 22 at the Motley Fair with music by Jerry's Dance Band; from 1-4 p.m. Tuesday at the Motley Ten-Hi with music by Michael James; and from 1-4 p.m. Wednesday at Waukenabo with music by the Country Ramblers.
