Meeting place changed for League of Women Voters

The League of Women Voters will meet for coffee at 5:30 p.m. and a program at 6 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church, 415 Juniper St., Brainerd, instead of the Brainerd Public Library as previously announced.

The program will be Jay Edens with Rural Renewable Energy Alliance.

Severe Weather Awareness Week is April 11-15

This week is Severe Weather Awareness Week in Minnesota with the Statewide Tornado Drill Day at 1:45 p.m. and 6:55 p.m. Thursday. Crow Wing County will participate in both tornado drills this week.

Schools and businesses are encouraged to practice emergency plans during the statewide tornado drill at 1:45 p.m. on Thursday. The second drill at 6:55 p.m. is to allow families and second-shift workers to practice sheltering plans. 

Find more lifesaving information at Links to the American Red Cross, the Minnesota Safety Council, the National Weather Service and others provide learning materials — many of them downloadable for use in homes, businesses and classrooms.

Also, Skywarn weather spotter classes will take place 6-7:30 p.m. April 27 in the Crow Wing County Land Service Building meeting rooms 1 and 2. The classes are free and open to everyone interested.

Skywarn is part of the National Weather Service’s warning program designed to establish a network of volunteers trained in the detection and reporting of life-threatening storms.

Lenten services at Trinity Lutheran Church 

Lenten services are continuing at Trinity Lutheran Church, 1420 South Sixth St., Brainerd, at 6 p.m. Wednesday. Intern Matt McWaters will be speaking on the Lenten Theme, “Generation Y.”

The 2011 Lenten Services is focusing on the theme of six generations, exploring each week how the various generations understand and experience God, faith and the church.

A soup supper will be served by the Tanzania Mission Group. The supper begins at 5 p.m. in the Fellowship Hall.

Cass County DFL Convention is Saturday at Backus City Hall

BACKUS — Rep. John Persell, DFL-Brainerd, will address delegates, alternates and guests at the Cass County DFL convention Saturday at the Backus City Hall.

Registration begins at 9:30 a.m. with the convention convening at 10 a.m. 

The agenda will include election of officers: chair, co-chair, secretary, treasurer, affirmative action officer and alternates to the state central committee as well as legislative updates.
