Brainerd’s clean-up, pick-up schedule altered

An overwhelming response to Brainerd’s free curbside pickup of residents’ unwanted items has forced a change in the city’s pick-up schedule.

City Administrator Dan Vogt said Tuesday the pick-up dates originally set will need to be changed because city crews have been unable to clear areas as fast as they originally wanted.

“We’re having too much success with the cleanup and things are starting to get backlogged,” Vogt said. “We need to push things back a bit.”

The clean-up started Monday in north and west Brainerd and was supposed to move onto south Brainerd on Tuesday, southeast Brainerd on Wednesday, northeast Brainerd west of Mill Avenue on Thursday and northeast Brainerd east of Mill Avenue on Friday.

That schedule has been changed, Vogt said.

Crews now will:

• Work to finish up west and south Brainerd on Wednesday.

• Get into southeast Brainerd on Thursday and Friday.

• Hopefully start with northeast Brainerd on Friday.

Finishing the removal of items will probably extend to Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday of next week, Vogt said. Also, brush left by residents on the curb will be picked up by city crews in the middle of next week, Vogt said.

“We’re just not able to get it cleaned up as quickly as we could,” Vogt said.

However, residents are advised not to place items on the curb after Friday morning, Vogt said, and once city crews have cleared a street they won’t be returning.

City crews from the building, street, parks and fire departments have been working during their regular hours or volunteering their time in the clean-up effort. Vogt said when the project is finished city officials will assess what needs to be changed and when the city might attempt the program again.
