Franken says he’ll fight for Essential Air Service for cities like Brainerd

While expressing relief a short-term deal had been reached to reopen the Federal Aviation Administration, Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., said this week he’ll continue to fight to protect Essential Air Service for cities that either benefit from it or will likely benefit from it in the future, such as Brainerd.

Noting Delta  Air Lines has indicated its desire to discontinue air service to several outstate cities, including Brainerd, Franken said EAS is more important than ever. In a statement he said Delta currently releases EAS funds to serve Hibbing, Thief River Falls and International Falls. Franken said Bemidji and Brainerd will likely become EAS airports in the future.

Case against Aitkin attorney set for Aug. 23

Jennifer Cummings, an Aitkin-based attorney charged Feb. 23 in Crow Wing County District Court with two counts of felony fifth-degree possession of drugs, will next appear in court for a contested omnibus hearing on Aug. 23. The hearing was reset from July 26. 

Cummings was arrested in January in Brainerd for possession of methamphetamine and the psychostimulant medication Adderall, which she purchased from an undercover officer through a known informant. 

Native plants to be the topic of Aug/ 20 Wild Ones event

 “Getting back to Eden: Restoring the Landscape with Native Plants” is the topic of the next Wild Ones Event at Northland Arboretum. The speaker will be Holly Holm, horticulturist and photographer.

The presentation will be 11 a.m. Aug. 20. Admission is free to Wild Ones members and $2 for all others.

Holm’s presentation will provide the basics for turning any suburban style landscape into an environment-friendly oasis. Her own backyard is a certified monarch waystation that received “Best Landscape Restoration” in 2009 from the watershed district.
