Woman accidentally shot in Morrison County
No condition was available Friday afternoon on a woman who was accidentally shot Thursday afternoon at her northeastern Morrison County home on Peavey Lake.
The woman, whom the Morrison County Sheriff’s Office declined to identify, suffered a gunshot while sitting in her yard shortly before 5 p.m. Thursday. When deputies arrived on the scene she was being treated by First Responders and Onamia Ambulance personnel for what appeared to be a gunshot wound to her left side.
The woman was transported to the Onamia Hospital and later airlifted to North Memorial in the Twin Cities where her condition was unknown.
According to witnesses at the scene, the victim had been sitting in a yard swing near the lake when she heard a shot nearby and felt a pain in her side. Deputies ultimately located a 17-year old boy who admitted he had been shooting at a squirrel and was uncertain what was behind his target. Further investigation revealed that the boy had fired a .22 caliber rifle and the round apparently passed through some shrubbery and struck the victim who was seated in a lawn swing approximately 140 feet away.
According to Morrison County Sheriff Michel Wetzel, the entire incident was regrettable.
“While this young man had no intention of hurting anybody, he made a poor decision to fire a weapon at a target without knowing where his round would ultimately end up,” Wetzel said.
Wetzel stated the case file, once completed, will be sent to the Morrison County Attorney's Office for review.
