Traffic will be on just about every Brainerd area motorist’s mind this week as an expected 100,000 visitors converge upon Brained International Raceway to attend the 30th annual Lucas Oil NHRA Nationals race.
Minnesota Department of Transportation officials said Monday motorists should plan for heavy traffic volumes on Brainerd lakes area highways — especially Highway 371 — Thursday through Sunday.
In addition, MnDOT officials announced two other projects this week — guard rail repair on the southbound lanes of the Highway 371 bridge over the Mississippi River and inspection of the Highway 210 bridge over the Mississippi in Brainerd. The guard rail repair on the Highway 371 bridge began Monday. The bridge inspection on the Highway 210 bridge starts Tuesday.
Because of the Lucas Oil Nationals this weekend work on the Highway 371 construction project south of Green Gables Road will be restricted to reduce traffic impacts. Crews will work from north of Green Gables Road to Pequot Lakes, and lane restrictions will be in effect in the areas where crews are working. Motorists should be patient, expect delays and be prepared for sudden stops on Highway 371.
The Minnesota Department of Transportation urges motorists to take alternative routes and avoid the area, if possible.
