Baxter City Council will meet Thursday at 6 p.m.

BAXTER — The Baxter City Council will hold a special session at 6 p.m. Thursday at city hall to consider action on various agreements related to the purchase of property for the future Cypress Drive right-of-way and the construction of a building on the parcel east of the Dondelinger dealership at 7915 Highway 210. 

Program on assistance dogs planned

A program on assistance dogs will be given at 7 p.m. Monday at the Brainerd Masonic Hall, 205 1/2 South Sixth Street. 

Those interested may learn how full trained dogs, often adopted from animal shelters, are provided to clients who live with disabilities that involve mobility challenges, hearing loss or deafness, seizure disorders, autism or diabetes. The presenter will be Dick McGinnis of Victoria. For additional information, call 829-6367.

Field day features hops production at area farm Saturday

Robert and Arlene Jones, participants in the Minnesota Department of Agriculture’s Sustainable Grant Program, are studying the feasibility of small scale hops production on their central Minnesota farm, The Farm on St. Mathias. 

The Blue Ox Brewer’s Society, a home beer brewer’s club, are cooperators in this project. The club members, along with the Joneses, will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the farm, located at 7579 St. Mathias Road, Brainerd, to answer questions regarding growing, cultivating, fertilizing, harvesting and brewing. 

Lunch will be available to purchase from a local caterer.

To get to the farm, go south on South Sixth Street/Business Highway 371 for two miles to County Road 21 (St. Mathias Road). Turn left and follow the road for three miles.

Crow Wing County Law Library Board to meet

The Crow Wing County Law Library Board of Trustees will meet at 4:30 p.m. Sept. 14 in the Crow Wing County Law Library located on the third floor of the Crow Wing County Judicial Center, 213 Laurel St., Brainerd. The meeting is open to the public and the public is encouraged to attend. Some of the topics to be discussed include possible future capital improvements and the addition of new volumes to the library’s collection.

Donation drive planned

BAXTER — Sazama Family Chiropractic and Wellness is having a school supply donation drive. The school supply list needs for Baxter Elementary at and Facebook page. Also supplies are to be dropped off at the business location at 7111 Forthun Road, Suite 200, Baxter.

Crosslake Legion auxiliary was top fundraiser for vets’ motorycle run

The Vietnam Vets Motorcycle Club conducted its seventh annual Motorcycle Run for Homeless Veterans on Saturday. The run has raised thousands  of dollars for the Homeless Veterans Fund at the St. Cloud VA health care system in the past seven years. 

This year’s run sponsors included Legion Organizations in Brainerd, Aitkin, Deerwood, Crosslake, Pine River, Pequot Lakes, and Nisswa as well as VFW Post 3839 in Jenkins.

 This year’s top fundraiser was the Crosslake Legion Post 500 Ladies Auxiliary which conducted a bake and produce sale on Aug. 12 and matched the proceeds of that sale for a total contribution of $1,164. Organizations and individual riders raised a total of $3,064, which will be presented to the St. Cloud VA this week. These monies are used throughout the year to provide basic necessities such as food, shelter, and clothing to veterans living on the street.

Registration starts soon for Brainerd Family YMCA swim lessons

Registration will soon begin for the next Brainerd Family YMCA swim lesson session. The lesson schedule is available at the YMCA and on the web at The session begins the week of Sept. 5 and meets once a week for seven weeks. These pre-school and school-age lessons are taught by trained instructors. YMCA members can begin registering for all classes Aug. 30.
