Central Lakes College in Brainerd scheduled a Basic Rider Course for motorcyclists Sept. 8, 10 and 11.

Minnesota law requires motorcyclists under age 18 to pass an approved Rider Skills Training course. Students must complete 14.5 hours of integrated instruction — 4.5 hours in the classroom and 10 hours of practice on a training motorcycle (provided).

The course is divided into two phases:

Level 1 concentrates on motorcycle familiarization, clutch control, throttle control, riding posture, and the four basic skills, which are straight-line riding, turning, shifting and stopping.

Level 2 includes limited-space maneuvers, counter-steering, cornering and swerving.

While no previous motorcycle riding experience is required, it can be beneficial.  Students must be able to ride a bicycle and must possess a valid driver’s license or motor vehicle instruction permit.

It is recommended — and to your advantage — to have a permit when signing up for this class. Riders 18 and over can earn their motorcycle license by successfully completing the course (if possessing a permit).

Each student must furnish his or her own protective clothing and DOT-approved helmet and 100 percent attendance is mandatory.

The fee is $160.

Dates and times are 5:30-10 p.m. Sept. 8 and Saturday and 8 a.m.-1 p.m. Sept. 10 and 11.

Registration deadline is Sept. 1. For more information, call (800) 933-0346 extension 8142 or 855-8142 or email bberg@clcmn.edu.
