‘Occupy Brainerd’ Event set

Organizers of an ongoing movement in support of Occupy Wall Street have called for a peaceful demonstration from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday in Brainerd in the public right of way and sidewalk in front of the Brainerd Wells Fargo Bank. The demonstration is being co-sponsored by Central Lakes Senior Caucus, Brainerd Trades and Labor, and several other groups and individuals.

The theme of the demonstration is, “Make Wall Street Pay.” Wells Fargo Bank was chosen as the demonstration site, not because of any local concerns about employees in the Brainerd office, but because of the history of the Fortune 500 corporation policies and procedures.

The news release distributed by area organizers said the Fortune 500 large banks were part of the banking system near collapse in 2008 after lending money to risky consumers beyond their means to pay for mortgages and then foreclosing on those loans which lead to the housing problems which continue today.

According to Terry Sluss, host of the Occupy Brainerd demonstration, the last demonstration held at Brainerd City Hall outside the office of Congressman Chip Cravaack found 65 people participate on a rainy day.
