The Minnesota Department of Transportation allegedly dumped at least five gallons of controversial 2, 4, 5-T within 200 yards of Baxter's municipal water well and didn't tell anyone about it. The charge was leveled by Gary Payne, an environmental activist.

No cases of Dutch elm disease have yet been reported in Crow Wing County, according to the state forestry department. The nearest cases have been two at Rice, one at Sauk Rapids and two in St. Cloud. Statewide, 1,209 new cases appeared this year.

“Blood for Defense” took a jump forward when 34 employees of the Hickerson Garment factory pledged to give a pint of blood to the county Red Cross effort. That lifted total response to 450 pints. It is hoped other workers will push the mark over the 1,000 quota.
