The Warriors enjoyed one of their most successful days in recent years at the state swimming meet. Sallie Park qualified for the second day of competition in the 100-yard butterfly, something done only twice since 1981. She set a school record in 1:01.71.

30 years ago (1981)

The Minnesota Department of Transportation allegedly dumped at least five gallons of controversial 2, 4, 5-T within 200 yards of Baxter's municipal water well and didn't tell anyone about it. The charge was leveled by Gary Payne, an environmental activist.

40 years ago (1971)

No cases of Dutch elm disease have yet been reported in Crow Wing County, according to the state forestry department. The nearest cases have been two at Rice, one at Sauk Rapids and two in St. Cloud. Statewide, 1,209 new cases appeared this year.

60 years ago (1951)

“Blood for Defense” took a jump forward when 34 employees of the Hickerson Garment factory pledged to give a pint of blood to the county Red Cross effort. That lifted total response to 450 pints. It is hoped other workers will push the mark over the 1,000 quota.

80 years ago (1931)

One day's wages for charity is the slogan to spur solicitors as movement to raise funds for Brainerd's needy is launched. The Brainerd Community Relief drive is on a crest of sincere endeavor to aid the suffering and distressed with necessities of life.

100 years ago (1911)

(Adv.) The Union Salvage Co. has bought the stock of the All Leather Shoe Co. at 40 cents on the dollar. We must sell and vacate in 10 days. Get ready for the most startling, unmerciful slaughter of shoe prices ever known in the history of Brainerd.
