Mark Williams, of St. Paul, contacted Salvation Army officials and wrote a letter to the Star Tribune (http://bit.ly/sfyCbn ) published Monday about the hired bell ringer that berated him and his 12-year-old son on their way in, and out of a Walgreens store in Inver Grove Heights.

Salvation Army spokeswoman Annette Bauer says the charity continues to investigate the actions of the bell ringer whom she describes as having a psychological disability.

Bauer says bell ringers at about 400 red kettle locations around the Twin Cities are paid $8 an hour or are volunteers.
