Woman admits to faking pregnancy to scam couples

KANSAS CITY, Kan. (AP) — A Kansas City, Mo., woman has admitted that she swindled 14 couples by pretending to be pregnant with twins who she wanted to give up for adoption.

U.S. Attorney Barry Grissom said 35-year-old Roxanne Janel Jones pleaded guilty Monday to one count of conspiracy to commit wire fraud and mail fraud, and one count of aggravated identity theft.

Jones asked the couples for money for rent and other living expenses

The swindled couples were from Bonner Springs, Overland Park, Florence, Olathe, Shawnee and Leavenworth in Kansas, and Minnesota, Georgia, California, Tennessee and Massachusetts.

A man who helped her, 29-year-old Taj A. Isaiah of Kansas City, Mo., is to be sentenced March 12 for conspiracy.

Jones and Isaiah are both scheduled to be sentenced March 12.
