Victim of fatal ATV crash identified

DEERWOOD — The names of the two men involved in an all-terrain vehicle crash in a remote area of Deerwood Township Monday have been released by the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office.

The men were identified Tuesday as Craig Rye, 47, Brainerd, who died at the scene; and his passenger and nephew, Erik Rye, 21, Shepard, Mont., who was badly injured. Rye was taken to Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby. No information on his condition was available Tuesday.

The crash was reported at 2:52 p.m. Monday and was located northwest of Clearwater Lake off Crow Wing County Highway 8. It was reported that the ATV the men were on rolled over onto them while driving down a steep embankment. Reporting parties riding with the victims were able to call 911 on their cell phones. The riders were unable to give their location due to the remote area they were in and lack of any trail system in the area. The 911 dispatchers with the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s office were able to determine where the riders were from their cell phone location at the time of the 911 call. A North Ambulance Air Care helicopter was able to locate the ATVs from the air and direct rescuers into the area.

Deerwood Fire and Rescue transported the parties from the scene by ATV then transferred them to Crosby Ambulance.

The crash is currently under investigation by the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Office.

Assisting Crow Wing County at the scene were the Deerwood Police Department and Crosby Ambulance, Deerwood Fire and Rescue, Deerwood First Responders, DNR and North Air Care.
