Wet, blustery weather for the weekend

Out with the old and in with the new will be assisted by a blustery wind as 2011 gives way to 2012.

The National Weather Service issued a wind advisory for Saturday with a forecast that calls for a strong northwest wind of 25 to 35 mph that may gust as high as 40 mph to 55 mph in central Minnesota. Dense fog was predicted to be common across west central and south central portions of the state late Friday into New Year’s Eve.

The wind is expected to pick up after 3 p.m. New Year’s Eve and continue through New Year’s Day. Besides blowing lawn ornaments and Christmas decorations around, the weather service reported the wind may make driving difficult, especially for high-profile vehicles.

And the wind has a good chance to be accompanied by snow or rain. The Brainerd lakes area has a 70 percent chance of snow and freezing drizzle before noon New Year’s Eve followed in the afternoon by rain and snow or a mix of the two, although the National Weather Service reports little or no ice accumulation is expected and new snow shouldn’t be more than an inch.

New Year’s Day should be mostly cloudy, gusty and colder with a high near 23 degrees and a chance for more snow, mainly after noon.

Monday is expected to be clear and cold with a high near 16, which may feel much colder with the wind. Monday night’s low could be a chilly 2 degrees. But mild temperatures return by midweek with temperatures expected in the mid- to upper-30s. By Friday, temperatures could climb to nearly 40 degrees beneath sunny skies.
