Diabetes program starts Friday at Essentia’s Brainerd clinic

“I CAN prevent Diabetes Program” begins Friday, a partnership of the Minnesota Department of Health and Essentia Health Diabetes Resource Program for the Lakes Area community.

The Essentia Health Diabetes Resource Program offers a 16-week lifestyle medication program called “I CAN prevent Diabetes” in partnership with the Minnesota Department of Health, based on research to prevent or delay the development of Type 2 Diabetes. The program is a commitment of 16 weeks, and will be held at Essentia Health St. Joseph’s - Brainerd Clinic, 2024 South Sixth Street, Brainerd, second floor, Meeting Room A. Beginning Friday, Feb. 3 through May 18 from 9-10 a.m. each Friday participants will learn and discuss preventative steps they can take.

“Diabetes is a chronic disease, meaning once diagnosed it will be a part of the individual’s life,” said Danette Holznagel, program coordinator for the Diabetes Resource Program at Essentia Health. “Most importantly approximately 98 percent is ‘self management’ or what that individual does to control their blood sugar and prevent complications. Risk for diabetes changes over time and we provide ongoing support to people with diabetes and those who are preventing it.”

The 16-week program cost is $140, this education is considered preventative education and is not currently covered by medical insurance companies, Medicare or Medicaid. For more information and to register for this series call 828-7444.
