Nor-Son, Inc., recently received two awards from the Minnesota Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC.) Nor-Son’s representatives accepted the awards Feb. 2 at ABC’s 2010 Excellence in Construction Banquet at the Metropolitan Ballroom.

In recognition of outstanding achievement and quality workmanship, Pyramid Awards were received in residential single family category in the $1-5 million range, for “The Summer Kitchen,” and in healthcare category in the $1-5 million range, for “The Garden House at St. Mary’s.”

ABC’s award program is designed to recognize publicly the quality and innovation of Merit Shop construction and to honor all the members of the construction team, including the contractor, the owner and the design team responsible for the project. The winning projects were selected from entries submitted from across the state and were judged on complexity, attractiveness, unique challenges, completion time, workmanship, innovation, safety and budget.

Nor-Son successfully cast a vision rich with family tradition in the design and construction of the “Summer Kitchen.” Designed exclusively for entertaining through the summer months, large exterior cedar and glass bi-fold doors provide easy access to lakeside activities, while power phantom screens drop to create a porch-like environment. A blend of cedar shakes and stone with hand-hewn, reclaimed oak timber accents maintain an aged appearance. The 1,825 square foot structure is complete with kitchen, dining, living room and bar area surrounding a full masonry stone, double-sided fireplace.

Nor-Son utilized its residential and healthcare expertise to design and build a 13,000 square foot memory care house for those suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and related forms of dementia, working closely with the Living Services Foundation and Benedictine Health System to formulate and cast their vision of health, independence and choice. The St. Mary’s Garden House provides a home-like environment, divided into two parts or households, housing up to 10 residents each. Each household includes living, dining and family space surrounding a high-end residential style kitchen which creates a comforting, warm environment that feels like home.
