Assault victim's name released; suspect expected to be arraigned Tuesday
The name of the 22-year-old Pine River man who was airlifted to St. Cloud Hospital with serious head injuries after he was assaulted in a Lake Shore parking lot early Sunday morning was released Monday.
Lake Shore Police Chief Steve Sundstrom identified the victim as Adam C. Stonacek. Sundstrum said William Kassulker, 25, Pillager, was arrested for the crime and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in Cass County District Court, pending formal charges of third-degree or a higher degree of felony assault.
The incident was reported about 1:30 a.m. Sunday and took place in the parking lot at Zorbaz on Gull in Lake Shore, just off Cass County Road 77.
Sundstrom said the motivation behind the assault between the two men appeared to be due to a relationship with Kassulker’s girlfriend. Sundstrom said apparently Stonacek had a prior relationship with the girlfriend.
Stonacek was first transported to Essentia Health-St. Joseph’s Medical Center in Brainerd before being airlifted to St. Cloud. Sundstrom said Stonacek suffered a fractured skull, bruising, swelling and a lip injury. Sundstrom said Stonacek was released from the hospital Monday.
“According to his (Stonacek’s) doctor, he is very lucky to be discharged from the hospital so soon,” said Sundstrom.
Sundstrom said Kassulker was kicked out of Zorbaz before the assault occurred. Sundstrom said there were witnesses to the assault, which is not believed to have involved a weapon other than the assailant’s hands.
The Cass County Sheriff’s office and Nisswa Police Department assisted the Lake Shore Police.
