Teacher layoffs in some area school districts will be the largest in years as school boards and administrators grapple with reductions in state aid. While some districts will hold the line at present staff levels, others will have to lay off 5 percent or more of their teachers.

40 years ago (1972)

A 9-0 lead in the first 3:15 of the game appeared to answer the Warriors’ recent slow start problems in their opening round game against North St. Paul. But Brainerd collapsed in the second half, scoring just 14 points against the press, and going down to defeat by 51-42.

60 years ago (1952)

Harold Masem, Brainerd’s middleweight wrestling champion of the world, will cap his current period of leave from soldiering at Camp Rucker, Ala., by wrestling Bobby Andorff in this city’s third wrestling card of the season. Tom DeLaHunt is matchmaker.

80 years ago (1932)

Judge Warner will investigate all phases of Supreme Court rulings before deciding whether to dismiss an action against George Wicks. Police found a gallon of alcohol and four empty bottles in a closet at his downtown apartment. But there was no evidence he sold liquor.

100 years ago (1912)

A new rural telephone line will soon be in commission in the St. Mathias district, with about 30 subscribers. The Northwestern Telephone Exchange Co. will build south to the city limits to connect with the St. Mathias line.
