Household Hazardous Waste opening for the season
The Crow Wing County Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) Facility will open for the season beginning April 25 at the Crow Wing County Landfill Site.
Then, starting in May, the HHW Facility will be open the second Wednesday and second Saturday through the month of October from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m.
Now is the time to get rid of all those old paint cans, cleaners and other chemicals that have been sitting in the garage or on basement shelves for years, the county reported. If disposed of inappropriately, the chemicals may contaminate land, ground water, surface water, or air quality. Removal of this material from garbage will also minimize the health risk to waste haulers and landfill operators.
People may bring hazardous waste from households such as: latex and oil paints, stains, aerosols, automotive products, household cleaners, yard and garden pesticides, batteries, and mercury containing devices such as thermometers and switches.
“We are asking folks to do their part protecting our unique environment and the HHW program is free,” said Doug Morris of the County’s Land Services Department, Environmental Services Division, in a news release.
Upon arriving at the County Landfill Site, residents must stop at the Landfill Office. The attendant will discuss the items to be disposed and provide directions to where the HHW facility is located at the site. It is important to note that all loads coming to the county landfill must be covered to ensure our roadways are not littered with debris.
