April is Sexual Assault Awareness Month
Sexual Assault Services, Inc. (SAS) has served more than 1,200 victims in Crow Wing County in the past five years, though this number represents just a small percentage of people who have been affected by these violent crimes. This month, Sexual Assault Awareness Month and Child Abuse Prevention Month.
SAS serves any victim of sexual assault ranging from sexual harassment and sexting to stalking or rape regardless of when they were assaulted and whether or not they want to report the assault. They also serve the friends and family of a victim who wants to learn how to best support their loved one or who need support themselves. One in six men and one in four women will be sexually assaulted in their lifetimes.
They serve community members through community education and outreach which includes speaking to classrooms, training for professionals involved in crisis intervention and sexual harassment training in the workplace.
SAS provides free and confidential advocacy services 24 hours a day. They assist victims in all areas in which their lives are affected after an assault including crisis intervention, personal advocacy, criminal or justice advocacy, filing reparations claims and support groups, although the majority of our work with victims is in dealing with the mental and emotional consequences of assault. They also work to serve the community as a whole through education, outreach and prevention efforts.
Support the effort by taking advantage of our free community education services or by supporting our organization. Community members can stand up against sexual violence by educating themselves and their families, friends, and communities. Start the conversation to let every man, woman, and child know that sexual assault hurts everyone. Sexual assault persists through silence.
