Kayakers stranded on Sauk Rapids Mississippi River island

SAUK RAPIDS, Minn. (AP) — Two kayakers swept up in the fast-moving Mississippi River were rescued after they became stranded on an island.

Stearns County sheriff's officials say a bicyclist on a trail in the Sauk Rapids Lions Park heard calls for help Monday afternoon from the stranded kayakers. The sheriff's department and a Department of Natural Resources officer launched a rescue boat and retrieved the two male kayakers, ages 16 and 21. They told authorities they had trouble controlling their kayaks in the swift-moving river and ended up on the island, calling for help.

The sheriff's department says the Mississippi and Sauk rivers are both moving very fast.
