Brainerd City Council: City administrator position calls for applicants

With current Brainerd City Administrator Dan Vogt's retirement date looming — effective June 30 — the Brainerd City Council continues to take strides to fill the shoes of Vogt's 23-year tenure.

Council members approved, with minor word changes, a four-page profile detailing qualities and requirements for the city administrator position, using the aid of Sharon Klumpp, senior vice president of the St. Paul-based executive hiring consultant agency, Springsted Incorporated.

"We had the (Brainerd) finance committee take the lead on this but that will be the last time they review, instead now the entire council will be fully involved," said Brainerd Council President Mary Koep. "I think we need to continue to move forward fairly quickly because time is of an essence."

Klumpp will serve as the primary contact for interested applicants, asking applicants to provide a resume, salary history and four work-related references to or by calling (651) 223-3053. More information on the position is also found on the City of Brainerd's website at

The position will remain open until filled, with review of resumes beginning July 9.

Before the meeting ended, Vogt thanked the public.

"Tonight (Monday) is my last Brainerd City Council meeting — ever," said Vogt. "I want to thank the community, residents, businesses and everyone I have worked with in the past 23 years.

"You all have been very supportive and I really appreciate it. I am looking forward to spending time with my family.

Vogt announced his retirement during the May 7 meeting.

In other business, the council heard from Sheila Haverkamp, Brainerd Lakes Area Economic Development Corporation (BLAEDC) executive director, and BLAEDC board members during a presentation on BLAEDC's work toward economic growth in Crow Wing County.

"We have begun the Executive Initiative, where former retired executives who have moved up in to the Brainerd lakes area now volunteer and act as mentors and counselors with local businesses," said Haverkamp. "We are in the beginning stages of bringing this (Executive Initiative) to the forefront (and) we're really optimistic on what they offer our community."

Haverkamp said a networking opportunity for interested community members and businesses will be held from 4-6 p.m. on June 26 at the Brainerd Lakes Regional Airport.

"Never underestimate what one contact with a business executive can bring," said Haverkamp. "Especially now, with the heightened awareness around economic development, we ask the community to partner with us and share the message that we're ready, so let's grow."

Council made a call for applicants for the following positions:

• Economic Development Authority; one position; term to expire Sept. 7, 2013.

• Cable TV Advisory Committee; one position; term to expire Dec. 31, 2012.

• Transportation Committee; two positions; terms to expire Dec. 31, 2012.
