Crash claims life of Brainerd man

BAXTER — A motorcycle driver suffered fatal injuries Saturday after striking a trailer being pulled behind a vehicle in Baxter.

The Baxter Police Department responded to a report of a crash about 3 p.m. Saturday at the intersection of Dellwood Drive and Novotny Road.

On scene the officers found that a motorcycle, driven by Matthew Abel, 30, of Brainerd, had crashed into a personal watercraft trailer.

The driver of the vehicle pulling the trailer was Paul Heath, 60, of St. Cloud.

Both vehicles had been traveling northbound on Dellwood Drive. The Heath vehicle was making a left-hand turn from Dellwood Drive onto Novotny Road.

According to several witnesses, the motorcycle was attempting to pass several vehicles when it came upon the turning vehicle and struck the trailer.

Abel was transported from the scene by North Ambulance but later died as a result of the injuries suffered in the crash. Baxter Police were assisted by the Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Department at the scene. The crash is still under investigation.
