Night to Unite in Baxter offers family activities, demonstrations and free root beer floats

BAXTER — Night to Unite, the seventh annual event in Baxter, is a chance to meet the people who live and work in the community.

This year’s event is 5-8 p.m. Aug. 7 at Oscar Kristofferson Park, behind the Baxter Elementary School. The family friendly event is free. The Baxter Lion’s Club will be selling hamburgers, hot dogs, chips and pop.

Activities include balloon twisting by Party World, face painting and free root beer floats. In addition, there will be numerous demonstrations, information sessions and prize drawings.

The community event grew from a desire to have a place where neighbors could get to know each other and to build neighborhood involvement by bringing police officers and communities together along with awareness and information related to crime prevention and local law enforcement efforts.

Night to Unite will feature several demonstrations including the use of a Taser. Also scheduled is a karate demonstration by Ultimate Martial Arts at 5:30 p.m. and one from the Baxter K-9 unit at 6:15 p.m. Registration for door prizes begins at 5 p.m. with a prize drawing at 7 p.m.

New this year are three information sessions. Colette Larson with Essentia Take Heart is presenting a session on automated external defibrillator use from 5-5:20 p.m. The Lakes Area Drug Investigative Division will present a drug information session from 5:30 p.m. to 5:50 p.m. Scams and financial crimes will be the subject of a session from 6-6:20 p.m. presented by Sgt. Russ Wicklund with the Minnesota Financial Crimes Task Force.

Other activities include the hands-on driving under the influence education driving course, which allows participants to simulate the driving experience using “drunk” goggles. A 911 practice activity is scheduled and “kids workshop” is sponsored by Home Depot. Target is also sponsoring activities at the event.

In addition to scheduled information sessions, participating agencies will have displays and be on hand to answer questions.

Participants in this year’s event include the Minnesota State Patrol helicopter, animal control enforcement, Brainerd Elks Lodge, Brainerd Fire Department, CenterPoint Energy, city of Baxter, Crow Wing County Health Department, Crow Wing County Passenger Safety Coalition, Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Department, Crow Wing Power, Essentia Health, Kiwanis - Kids Triathlon, Lakes Area Law Enforcement Association, Minnesota Department of Natural Resources, North Ambulance, Northland Fire and Safety.

The event is presented by the Baxter Police Department and Baxter Lions.
