JENKINS — The Pequot Lakes Fire Department Monday responded to a cooking oil fire in a basement at 4317 Oak Lane in Jenkins Township.

The fire burned part of the structure’s basement and caused some damage to the main floor, Pequot Fire Chief Tom Nelson reported. Occupants were cooking fish in the basement of the house, went upstairs to eat and forgot to turn off the stove, Nelson said.

“They’ll need to do some cleaning to get the smoke smell out,” Nelson said, adding that the house wasn’t a total loss and no one was hurt.

Nisswa, Ideal and Crosslake fire departments also responded to the fire, but were dismissed at the site.
