A float plane crashed on North Long Lake about 1 p.m. Sunday, according to witnesses on the lake.

A man who was fishing with family members on the main bay of North Long Lake, but who wished to remain anonymous, said the pilot — the only person in the plane — was not hurt in the crash. The man said it appeared the pilot had the plane under control while coming in for a landing on the lake before crashing into the lake.

“We were out fishing and saw a single engine plane with pontoons on it come in for a landing,” he said. “When he was coming everything looks fine and the next minute we knew his (plane’s) nose was up in the lake.

“We got over there to see if the pilot was OK, and other than a few scrapes he didn’t require any medical attention. It happened so fast, the plane ended up completely upside down and was taking in water fast. It happened in a split second.”

The Crow Wing County Sheriff’s Department responded to the crash. Further information on the crash was not immediately available Sunday evening.
