Brainerd City Council: Trail from Spurline to Kiwanis plans to get underway in coming weeks

Department of Natural Resources (DNR) paved the way for development of a trail connecting from Spurline to Kiwanis in Brainerd.

Brainerd City Planner Mark Ostgarden announced during Monday night’s city council meeting that upon receiving the DNR’s approval, the city is able to move forward with the trail.

“On Friday we received word from the DNR that all of our environmental review work was completed,” said Ostgarden. “So we were able to authorize to get in a contract with the DNR and today (Monday) we met with the engineering company and hopefully will beginning the trail project in the next couple weeks.”

In other business, the council:

Learned Brainerd is nearing the hiring of a new city administrator, with 16 applicants invited to complete a further questionnaire for the Brainerd City Council’s screening.

Using the aid of Sharon Klumpp, senior vice president of the St. Paul-based executive hiring consultant agency, Springsted Incorporated, the original applicant field contained 52 applicants for the position that opened up following Dan Vogt’s retirement in June. The council will take time at 5:30 p.m. on Thursday to meet with Klumpp and look at the remaining applicants resumes and questionnaires before the candidates move on to a screening interview.

Unanimously approved a $65,000 settlement to be paid to Country Village Apartments on the College Drive lawsuit. City Attorney Tom Fitzpatrick said that the $65,000 includes the $11,250 already paid to Country Village.

Approved the Brainerd Ad Hoc Historic Committee to continue its efforts in digging up Brainerd’s rich history up to October 2013. Council heard a brief presentation from committee members on some of the things the committee is doing, including a book, online archived maps and newspapers.

Made a call for applicants for the following positions:

• Economic development authority, one position, term to expire Sept. 7, 2013.

• Cable TV advisory committee, one position, term to expire Dec. 31, 2012.

• Transportation committee, two positions, both terms to expire Dec. 31, 2013.

Adjourned to Tuesday’s special meeting at 5:30 p.m. in city hall.
