Fund estabished for Emily family

EMILY — A fund has been established for Laura Hughes and her family, who live east of Emily and whose home was damaged in a recent storm.

The family has been living in converted shed while work was being done on a permanent house for them. Hughes, who suffers from multiple health problems including diabetes and her older children continued to work on the house and this past year were able to finish the roof with the metal roofing they had on hand. The goal was to finish enclosing the new house prior to the winter and begin again next spring.

Those plans took a giant step backward on Aug. 3 when several small funnel clouds formed over their property and completely tore off the roof — shingles, sheathing and trusses — of the new garage, stripped the metal roofing and felt off the house under construction, and damaged several other outbuildings. Fortunately, no one was injured. Unfortunately, given their financial situation, none of their losses were insured.

The family needs money to buy the materials so it can return their building under construction to a condition where it can withstand the winter without any further deterioration of the frame and sheathing and so they can store other items inside. A fund has been established in the name of Laura Hughes at Pine River State Bank, Emily Branch to accept donations. Interested persons may stop by in person and make a donation or can mail contributions to P.O. Box 97, Emily. MN 56447. All money donated will only be used for building materials and costs.

Those who have questions or want to donate usable building materials, or skills and labor, may contact Pete Abler at 692-3892 or Nancy Moritz at 763-3097.
